Waynesburg tops Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped to 3-3 overall Saturday afternoon with a 38-0 setback against visiting Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Waynesburg quarterback Carter Hill threw four touchdown passes in the first half to help the Yellow Jackets (5-1, 3-1 PAC) take a 35-0 lead by halftime.

Senior wide receiver Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy) caught seven passes for 87 yards while senior wide receiver Khalil Ervin (Malvern, Pa./Phoenixville) had seven catches for 73 yards.

Senior quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) completed 23 of 44 pass attempts for 212 yards. Junior wingback Sam Ivan (Whitehouse, Ohio/Toledo Christian) led the Wolverines on the ground with 26 yards on five carries.

Senior linebacker Ben Manwaring (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) posted a team-high 10 tackles while senior safety Chris Gibbs (Akron, Ohio/Revere) had nine stops. Junior linebacker Jason Skyrm (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) forced fumble that senior defensive end Ryan Althausen (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) recovered.

Sophomore nose tackle Brent Veerman (Powell, Ohio/Columbus Crusaders) had 1.5 sacks while sophomore linebacker Brandon Berringer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) also had a sack. Junior defensive tackle Robert Rollick (Woodland, Pa./Saint Marys) added a half sack.

Waynesburg took a 7-0 lead with 8:26 left in the first quarter when Hill threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Mike Ferraro. The lead grew to 14-0 with 39 seconds left in the first quarter when Josh Tolliver recovered a Grove City fumble and returned it 75 yards to the end zone.

Hill threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Andrew English with 10:30 left in the first half. Two minutes later, Hill threw a 49-yard touchdown strike to Tim Cooper. Waynesburg closed the first-half scoring on the final play of the second quarter when Willie Leavell caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Hill.

Hill completed 22 of 38 passes for 332 yards. English caught six passes for 66 yards. Jerry Lawman ran for a team-high 76 yards on 16 carries. Waynesburg owned a 444-266 edge in total offense.

Grove City returns to action October 26 at Thomas More. Kickoff in Crestview Hills, Ky., is 1:30 p.m.
