Thomas More tops Grove City
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 44-7 verdict at Thomas More Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Bank of Kentucky Field.
Grove City took a 7-3 lead with eight minutes left in the first quarter when senior quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) fired a 53-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy).
Thomas More (6-1, 5-1) took a 10-7 lead two minutes later on Domonique Hayden's six-yard touchdown run. Tommy Budke added a pair of 20-yard field goals to close the first half scoring as the Saints led 16-7 at the half.
Hayden posted touchdown runs of 16 and one yard, respectively, in the third quarter stretching the lead to 30-7. Hayden then ran for an 89-yard touchdown run with 14:33 left. Thomas More halfback Scootie Middleton closed the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown run at the 5:36 mark of the fourth quarter.
Pell completed 11 of 24 passes for 119 yards. Ritchie caught six passes for 94 yards. Sophomore tailback Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) led Grove City with 48 rushing yards on 14 carries.
Senior strong safety Chris Gibbs (Akron, Ohio/Revere) led the Grove City defense with 17 tackles. Senior inside linebacker Ben Manwaring (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) added 15 stops. Sophomore linebacker Bobby Tuttle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) had 11 tackles and a sack.
Senior free safety Joe Diani (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) intercepted a pass, his third of the season.
Hayden finished with 327 rushing yards. Thomas More owned a 597-145 edge in total offense.
Grove City (3-4, 1-4) will visit conference rival Geneva next Saturday at 1 p.m.
