Grove City falls on road

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 39-7 decision at Geneva Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Reeves Field.

Geneva (5-3, 4-2 PAC) jumped out to a 27-0 lead in the first half before Grove City broke through in the final minute of the first half. Senior quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) scored on a one-yard run with 50 seconds left for Grove City. Freshman kicker Ryan Stewart (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) added the extra point.

Pell's run capped a nine-play, 76-yard touchdown drive. His 38-yard completion to senior wide receiver Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy) helped spark the drive. Ritchie caught a career-high 10 passes for 135 yards.

Pell completed 7 of 15 passes for 95 yards. Sophomore quarterback Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) completed six of his seven pass attempts for 59 yards.

Sophomore tailback Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) led Grove City with 39 rushing yards on 10 carries.

Senior defensive end Ryan Althausen (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) led the defense with 4.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback sack. Sophomore inside linebacker Bobby Tuttle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and senior inside linebacker Ben Manwaring (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) both had a game-high 15 tackles.

Geneva took a 7-0 lead with 10:48 left in the first quarter on Rocco Colavecchia's three-yard touchdown run. Colavecchia pushed the lead to 13-0 with a four-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter.

Colavecchia threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Zachary Taylor with 10:31 left in the first half while Kellen Mackey added a six-yard touchdown run at the 2:14 mark of the second quarter.

Taylor caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Zack Hayward with 10:18 left in the third quarter. Mike Gardner kicked a 32-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter while a late safety closed the scoring.

Hayward completed 29 of 36 passes for 286 yards. He also ran for 81 yards. Geneva held a 41:55-18:05 edge in time of possession.

The home team has won each of the last seven meetings in the Grove City-Geneva series.

Grove City (3-5, 1-5 PAC) will host Saint Vincent next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on Senior Day at Robert E. Thorn Field.
