Grove City tops Bearcats
GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College football team jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first 18 minutes Saturday afternoon and held on for a 36-26 victory over visiting Saint Vincent in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Sophomore tailback Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) ran for a career-high 117 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries while senior quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) added 95 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Maskrey gave Grove City a 7-0 lead with 10:47 left in the first quarter with a one-yard touchdown run. That capped a nine-play, 41-yard drive which began when freshman cornerback Jimmy Cianciola (Uniontown, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) recovered a fumble and returned it nine yards to the Saint Vincent 41.
Grove City quickly boosted the lead to 14-0 just 21 seconds later when senior safety Chris Gibbs (Akron, Ohio/Revere) scooped up a fumble at the Saint Vincent 27 and returned it for a touchdown.
Senior defensive end Ryan Althausen (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) forced the fumble.
The lead swelled to 21-0 with 12:41 left in the first half when Pell fired a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ritchie.
Saint Vincent (0-9, 0-7) broke through with 7:19 left in the first half on Andy Borgen’s one-yard quarterback sneak.
The Wolverines opened the second half with a 13-play, 61-yard touchdown drive that Maskrey punctuated with an eight-yard touchdown run. Freshman kicker Ryan Stewart (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) kicked his fourth extra point, stretching the lead to 28-7.
Borgen threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Rob O’Hearn with 6:37 left in the third quarter while Chris Monroe followed with a 34-yard touchdown run at the 2:22 mark. The extra point failed after Monroe’s score, however.
Grove City answered with a 12-play touchdown drive in which all 71 yards came on the ground. Maskrey bulled into the end zone from the 4, giving Grove City a 34-20 lead with 8:32 left.
Pell then threw a two-point pass to Ritchie that pushed the lead to 16.
Borgen threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Alex Charles with 2:31 left to close the scoring. The subsequent two-point conversion failed.
Pell completed seven of 15 passes for 71 yards. Ritchie caught three passes for 44 yards while senior Khalil Ervin (Malvern, Pa./Phoenixville) also had three catches for 21 yards.
Sophomore linebacker Brandon Berringer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) made his first start for Grove City and recorded a career-high 13 tackles. Junior linebacker Jason Skyrm (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) recorded eight tackles, a sack and forced a fumble.
Senior linebacker Ben Manwaring (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) also recorded a sack. Freshman safety Ned Hull (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) helped seal the win with an interception in the final minute of the game.
Borgen completed 29 of 45 passes for 274 yards. He also ran for 63 yards on 14 carries. Monroe led the Bearcats with 64 rushing yards on nine attempts.
Saint Vincent owned a 419-298 edge in total offense. Grove City went 11 for 17 on third down and held a 31:31-28:29 edge in time of possession.
Grove City improved to 14-1 in its last 15 Senior Day games. The Wolverines had not played a home game in 28 days.
The Wolverines (4-5, 2-5 PAC) conclude the 2013 regular season next Saturday at Thiel in the 30th annual game for the coveted Mercer County Cup.
