Wolverines drop league opener
LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team opened its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Saturday afternoon with a 31-14 setback against host Saint Vincent (2-2, 2-0) at Chuck Noll Field.
Grove City accumulated 343 yards of total offense and held a 20-14 edge in first downs. Defensively, Grove City held Saint Vincent to a 2-for-13 effort on third down but the Wolverines turned over the ball five times and Saint Vincent also returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.
Saint Vincent grabbed a 10-0 lead in the first quarter but Grove City cut the lead to 10-7 with 4:40 left in the first half when junior wide receiver David Folkmire (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) pulled in an 11-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Aaron Lundmark (Russell, Pa./Eisenhower).
Saint Vincent extended its lead back to 10, 17-7, when Shavonta Craft scored on a 21-yard touchdown run with 11:25 left in the third quarter. The Wolverines answered quickly, however, when junior quarterback Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) fired a 32-yard touchdown pass to senior wingback Sam Ivan (Whitehouse, Ohio/Toledo Christian) that trimmed the lead to 17-14.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Grove City forced a Saint Vincent punt from the Bearcat 9. However, the Wolverines fumbled the punt and Saint Vincent's Renny LaRue-Holloman scooped up the fumble and ran 51 yards for a touchdown.
Saint Vincent closed the scoring with 3:23 left on Andy Borgen's 36-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Lowman.
The Bearcats opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when Dwayne Brown recovered a blocked put and returned it 25 yards to the end zone.
Folkmire caught a career-high eight passes for 75 yards. Peach completed 12 of 20 passes for 168 yards while Lundmark went 6 for 14 for 40 yards. Saint Vincent intercepted each quarterback twice, however.
Junior tailback Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) ran for a team-high 39 yards on 10 carries. Grove City held a 31:35-28:25 edge in time of possession.
Defensively, senior linebacker Jason Skyrm (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) recorded two of Grove City's four sacks. Junior linebacker Brandon Berringer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and junior end Tyler Campbell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) also had sacks. Berringer posted a team-high 11 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.
Craft led Saint Vincent with 199 rushing yards on 22 carries. Borgen went 11 for 16 for 99 yards while Matt Deakins completed 12 of 17 attempts for 86 yards.
Grove City will host Waynesburg next Saturday at 2 p.m. in the annual Homecoming game at Robert E. Thorn Field.
