W&J tops Grove City
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 55-14 decision to visiting Washington & Jefferson Saturday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Grove City broke through midway through the third quarter when freshman fullback Joe Swanson (Wattsburg, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) bulled into the end zone from the W&J 2.
The Wolverines then closed the scoring with 9:30 left in the game when junior wide receiver Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Gabe Greco (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton).
W&J halfback Ryan Ruffing ran for three touchdowns in the first half and then caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Pete Coughlin midway through the second quarter. Coughlin then threw two touchdown passes to Jesse Zubik, helping W&J take a 41-0 lead in the third quarter.
Swanson led Grove City with 34 rushing yards on nine carries. Peach caught five passes for 52 yards. Junior wide receiver David Folkmire (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) pulled in seven passes for 40 yards.
Greco finished 7 for 15 for 61 yards. Sophomore quarterback Aaron Lundmark (Russell, Pa./Eisenhower) completed 13 of 24 passes for 70 yards.
Junior linebacker Brandon Berringer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) recorded a career-high 17 tackles and a sack for Grove City. Senior defensive tackle Robert Rollick (Woodland, Pa./Saint Marys) recorded 3.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a sack. He also blocked an extra point.
Ruffing ran for 145 yards on 17 carries. Coughlin completed 27 of 35 passes for 309 yards. Max Creighan caught 13 passes for 107 yards while Zubik had five catches for 115 yards. W&J (5-0, 3-0) had 31 first downs and outgained Grove City 594-201. Grove City held a 31:07-28:53 edge in time of possession.
Grove City will visit conference foe Carnegie Mellon next Saturday at 1 p.m.
