CMU tops Grove City
PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 21-10 decision at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Carnegie Mellon Saturday afternoon at Gesling Stadium.
After CMU (3-3, 3-3 PAC) grabbed an early 7-0 lead on Andrew Hearon's five-yard touchdown run, Grove City answered with a 19-play, 61-yard scoring drive that consumed 9:12 of the first quarter. Sophomore kicker Ryan Stewart (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) capped the drive by drilling a 32-yard field goal.
Carnegie Mellon pushed its lead to 14-3 on its next possession when Zach Cree scored on a two-yard run, closing a 13-play, 61-yard drive with 13:20 left in the second quarter. The Tartans opened the scoring in the second half when Troy Witt scored on a nine-yard run with 3:34 left in the third quarter.
Grove City pulled to within 21-10 midway through the fourth quarter as freshman quarterback Gabe Greco (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver David Folkmire (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway).
Grove City's final drive of the game ended with the Wolverines' lone turnover of the day when CMU's Ryan Aitken intercepted Greco with 1:17 left in the game.
Greco completed 11 of 23 passes for 131 yards. Fellow freshman quarterback Tyler Kepple (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) completed all six of his pass attempts for 34 yards. Folkmire caught seven passes for 56 yards while junior Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) had four receptions for 26 yards. Sophomore Luke Brancato (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) added three catches for a team-high 59 yards.
Greco led Grove City with 51 rushing yards on 16 attempts. Freshman tailback Marcus Ubinger (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) added 27 yards on seven attempts.
Junior linebacker Brandon Berringer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) led the Grove City defense with eight tackles and a forced fumble. Junior defensive ends Tyler Campbell (Winchester, Va./Keystone Oaks, Pa.) and Ryan Hickey (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) both had sacks while senior tackle Robert Rollick (Woodland, Pa./Saint Marys) recovered a fumble.
Hearon completed 15 of 24 passes for 128 yards. Sam Benger led CMU with 139 rushing yards on 19 attempts. He also caught four passes for 62 yards. CMU held a 337-265 edge in total offense. CMU had 17 first downs while Grove City had 16. The Wolverines went 8 for 18 on third down.
Grove City will visit conference foe Thomas More next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Crestview Hills, Ky.
