Thiel takes Cup, 42-21
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team closed the 2014 season Saturday afternoon with a 42-21 setback to visiting Thiel at Robert E. Thorn Field in the 31st Mercer County Cup game.
Grove City trailed 7-0 in the first quarter but tied the game with 3:06 remaining in the period when sophomore quarterback Aaron Lundmark (Russell, Pa./Eisenhower) threw a two-yard touchdown pass to senior wingback Brian Wells (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora). Sophomore Ryan Stewart (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) added the extra point.
Thiel posted 21 points in the second quarter to take a 28-7 lead by halftime, however. Marcus Johnson caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Radke with 10:11 left in the half, breaking the 7-7 tie. Moments later, Cody McClelland intercepted Lundmark at the Grove City 15 and returned it for a touchdown.
Thiel closed the first-half scoring with 5:06 left in the half on Radke's nine-yard touchdown run. In the third quarter, Radke scored from seven yards out and Taylor Fink added a 15-yard touchdown run.
Grove City slashed the Thiel lead with a pair of touchdowns in the final period. Junior tailback Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) scored on a one-yard run with 10:40 left in the game. On Grove City's next possession, freshman quarterback Tyler Kepple (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) fired a 31-yard touchdown pass to senior wingback Sam Ivan (Whitehouse, Ohio/Toledo Christian) with 7:51 remaining.
Kepple completed 12 of 23 passes for 131 yards. Lundmark went 5 for 14 for 23 yards. Each quarterback threw a touchdown and an interception. Maskrey led Grove City with 34 rushing yards on 11 carries.
Junior wide receiver Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) caught four passes for 46 yards while junior David Folkmire (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) had four catches for 26 yards. Ivan had a game-high 50 receiving yards on two catches.
Defensively, senior linebacker Jason Skyrm (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) posted 10 tackles, including five for loss. He forced two fumbles and recorded 2.5 sacks. Junior linebacker Brandon Berringer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) tallied a game-high 13 tackles and forced a fumble.
Junior nose tackle Brent Veerman (Powell, Ohio/Columbus Crusaders) added nine stops, forced a fumble and had a sack. Senior defensive tackle Robert Rollick (Woodland, Pa./Saint Marys), freshman defensive end Eric Kinderman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and junior linebacker Tyler Campbell (Winchester, Va./Keystone Oaks, Pa.) all had sacks as well.
Radke completed 14 of 23 passes for 166 yards. He also ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson caught seven passes for 99 yards.
Skyrm finished the season with nine sacks, 20 tackles for loss and five forced fumbles. The 20 tackles for loss are the second-most in program history and the nine sacks are the most since Mike Choby had 9.5 in 2003.
Prior to the game, Grove City honored its 10-man senior class as part of Senior Day festivities: center Ron Dornin (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin), wide receiver Ryan Duran (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), tackle Jason Glacken (South Fork, Pa./Forest Hills), Ivan, guard Zach Kepple (Chicora, Pa./Karns City), Rollick, tight end Adam Shick (Sheffield Lake, Ohio/Lutheran West), Skyrm, guard Andrew Stupakis (New Boston, Mich./Huron) and Wells.
Grove City had won seven straight Mercer County Cup games prior to Saturday's setback.
