Waynesburg edges Grove City, 35-31
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped to 0-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 35-31 setback Saturday afternoon at host Waynesburg on Homecoming at John Wiley Stadium. Waynesburg halfback Jerry Lawman scored on a four-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left to put the Yellow Jackets ahead.
Grove City had taken a 31-28 lead with 8:52 left in the game when senior wide receiver Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Matt Pennypacker (Lititz, Pa./Warwick).
Grove City trailed 14-7 entering the second quarter but pulled to within 14-10 with 11:29 left in the half as senior kicker Payton Carlucci (Mars, Pa./Vincentian) drilled a 34-yard field goal. Following a successful pooch kickoff that sophomore safety Kyle Beyer (Perry, Ohio/Perry) recovered at the Waynesburg 40, the Wolverines took their first lead of the game when freshman running back Nick Scholle (South Park, Pa./South Park) scored on a nine-yard touchdown run at the 8:27 mark.
Grove City opened the second half with a 14-play, 80-yard touchdown drive that Scholle capped with a one-yard touchdown run.
Lawman's two-yard touchdown run cut the lead to 24-21 with 5:42 left in the third quarter while Kevin Barnes' 27-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter put Waynesburg back ahead.
Senior fullback/tight end Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) opened the Grove City scoring midway through the first quarter when he scored on a six-yard touchdown run.
Pennypacker completed 14 of 26 passes for 171 yards. Senior wide receiver Tyler Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) caught four passes for 50 yards while Peach had four catches for 49 yards. Sophomore running back Marcus Ubinger (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) led Grove City with 65 rushing yards on 10 carries.
Senior linebacker Bobby Tuttle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) led the Wolverine defense with nine tackles and a sack. Senior nose tackle Brent Veerman (Powell, Ohio/Columbus Crusaders) also recorded a sack. Freshman cornerback Cobie Pratt (Vienna, Ohio/Mathews) recorded his second interception of the season.
Lawman ran for 148 yards on 24 carries. Waynesburg quarterback Jake Dougherty went 13 of 22 for 175 yards. Grove City held a 21-20 edge in first downs while Waynesburg outgained the Wolverines, 390-336.
Grove City will visit conference Washington & Jefferson next Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
