Grove City falls on road
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 55-7 decision at Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.
Grove City broke through with 13:41 remaining when sophomore wide receiver Gabe Greco (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Caleb Jakiel (Moon Township, Pa./Moon).
Jakiel finished the game 5 of 9 for 94 yards. Sophomore quarterback Matt Pennypacker (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) went 12 of 24 for 91 yards.
Junior Zach Gazdacko (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) caught a team-high six passes for 45 yards while senior Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) had three receptions for 49 yards. Sophomore running back Marcus Ubinger (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) also had three catches for 24 yards.
Senior linebacker Brandon Berringer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) recorded 12 tackles for Grove City while senior linebacker Bobby Tuttle (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) added 10 stops.
Senior nose tackle Brent Veerman (Powell, Ohio/Columbus Crusaders), sophomore defensive tackle Connor Lowe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) and freshman cornerback Daniel Jackson (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) all recorded sacks. Freshman cornerback Cobie Pratt (Vienna, Ohio/Mathews) recovered a fumble that sophomore end Quinton Reed (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) recovered.
Junior cornerback Jimmy Cianciola (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) and sophomore defensive end Eric Kinderman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) both blocked kicks.
W&J, which entered the game ranked 20th in Division III, led 42-0 at halftime. The Presidents outgained Grove City, 652-144. W&J quarterback Pete Coughlin completed 20 of 22 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns. Jesse Zubik led W&J with six catches for 86 yards.
Grove City returns home next Saturday to host conference foe Carnegie Mellon. Kickoff at Robert E. Thorn Field is 1:30 p.m.
