No. 11 Thomas More tops Wolverines
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team fell to visiting Thomas More, 66-14, in Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Grove City scored twice in the latter portion of the second quarter as junior quarterback Caleb Jakiel (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) threw a pair of touchdown passes. Jakiel fired a 33-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Brett Pinson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) with 4:40 left in the first half to open the Wolverine scoring.
Three minutes later, Jakiel tossed a four-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Tyler Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette), cutting Thomas More's lead to 35-14.
Jakiel completed 8 of 20 passes for 142 yards, including a season-long 61-yard completion to junior Zach Gazdacko (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake). Pinson caught three passes for 65 yards while senior Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) had three catches for 30 yards.
Jakiel led Grove City with 21 rushing yards.
Senior linebacker Brandon Berringer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) led the Wolverine defense with 16 tackles while sophomore safety Andrew Seifert (Kettering, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) added 15 stops and a forced fumble. Sophomore defensive end Jacob Armbrecht (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) recorded a sack.
Hjavier Pitts paced Thomas More with 156 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Luke Zajac also ran for three scores. Quarterback Brenan Kuntz completed 14 of 20 passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns. Goose Cohorn caught four passes for 139 yards.
Thomas More outgained Grove City, 687-233. The Saints (8-0, 6-0 PAC) led 42-14 at halftime. Thomas More is ranked 11th in the D3Footbal.com and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III polls.
Grove City will visit conference foe Bethany next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
