Wolverines set records at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. -- Grove City College junior quarterback Caleb Jakiel (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) set a pair of individual records Saturday afternoon while senior wide receiver Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) tied a longstanding program record in the Wolverines' 58-26 Presidents' Athletic Conference road setback to Bethany at Bison Stadium.

Jakiel threw for 428 yards on 29-of-55 accuracy, establishing a single-game Grove City record for passing yards. Jakiel also ran for 56 yards, giving him 484 yards of total offense. That also sets a new program record.

Three of Jakiel's four touchdown passes went to Peach, who became the fifth player in program history to catch three touchdowns in a game. Peach finished with 93 yards on six catches.

Junior wide receiver Brett Pinson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) hauled in seven passes for 180 yards and a touchdown. The 180 yards are the third-most by a Grove City receiver in program history. Junior Zach Gazdacko (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) caught seven passes for 53 yards.

Grove City amassed a season-high 523 yards of total offense and garnered 26 first downs. The Wolverines' 428 passing yards as a team are the most ever in program history.

Grove City took a 6-0 lead with 6:25 left in the first quarter when Peach caught a five-yard touchdown pass. An interception and subsequent 29-yard return by senior linebacker Brandon Berringer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) set up the score.

After Bethany took a 14-6 lead, the Wolverines pulled to with 14-12 when Jakiel threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Peach on the first play of the second quarter. Jakiel then threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Pinson with 11:47 left in the half, closing Grove City's first-half scoring.

Bethany took command of the game by scoring 34 unanswered points, however. Peach scored his third touchdown of the afternoon with 5:12 left in the third quarter when he caught a 21-yard scoring pass from Jakiel.

Berringer led the Grove City defense with 11 tackles. Sophomore end Jacob Armbrecht (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) posted 10 stops and a half sack. Senior nose tackle Brent Veerman (Powell, Ohio/Columbus Crusaders) tallied 1.5 sacks while senior end Tyler Campbell (Winchester, Va./Keystone Oaks, Pa.) also had a sack.

Sophomore defensive tackle Connor Lowe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) blocked an extra point.

Bethany outgained Grove City 648-523. Jalen Holmes led Bethany with 341 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Lincon Reyes completed 14 of 21 passes for 206 touchdowns and three scores. Eric Blinn had nine catches for 137 yards.

Current offensive coordinator Andrew DiDonato previously held Grove City's single-game records for passing yards (382) and total offense (473 yards). He set both marks against Carnegie Mellon six years ago.

Peach joined Andy Sems (1991), Rick Sems (1992), Scott Henry (1993) and Luke O'Hara (2008) as Wolverine players who caught three touchdowns in one game.

Grove City will close its home schedule next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against conference rival Westminster.
