Bowers Tips 4,000 Yards At Bluffton
BLUFFTON, OH, September 18, 1999--R.J. Bowers (West Middlesex, PA/West Middlesex) reached a pair of milestones, but couldn't offset Blufftons 540 yards of offense as the Beavers downed the visiting Wolverines, 30-22.
Bowerss 124 yards rushing helped him eclipse the 4,000-yard mark for his career (4,005) at GCC. It was also the 19th straight game that Bowers rushed for 100 or more yards, tying the Division III record for consecutive 100-yard games set by Brandon Steinheim of Wesley over the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
Grove Citys passing attack continued its improvement since last season as quarterback Steve Lacinski (New Kensington, PA/Valley) completed 9 of 15 passes for 118 yards. Lacinski and tight end Andrew LeVake (Faribault, MN/Faribault) connected on a ten-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter. LeVake caught a career-high three passes in the game. Split end Jake Dailey (Karns City, PA/Karns City) also pulled in three receptions. Fullback Michael Orlando (Wickliffe, OH/Wickliffe) punched in a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Bluffton quarterback Joel Parrett threw for 309 yards on the afternoon, while tailback Tyson Goings rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns. The Beavers held a seven-minute advantage in time of possession.
Defensively, free safety Mike Kashurba (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) registered 15 tackles, intercepted a pass and ran back a botched PAT for two points.
The loss dropped Grove City to 0-3 on the season. The Wolverines open conference play at home next Saturday against Bethany. Kickoff at Thorn Field is set for 1:30 p.m.
