Browns claim Bowers on waivers
BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns claimed former Grove City College fullback R.J. Bowers on waivers late Tuesday, one day after the Pittsburgh Steelers released college football's all-time leading rusher.
Bowers appeared in three games with Pittsburgh in 2001, rushing for 84 yards on 18 attempts. His first career touchdown came on a 21-yard run against Cleveland in the season finale. The Browns are listing Bowers as an H-back, a hybrid of the fullback and tight end positions. The 6-foot, 245-pound Bowers appeared in the Steelers' first two exhibition games.
In four seasons at Grove City, Bowers rushed for an NCAA-record 7,353 yards and also established NCAA records with 562 points, 92 touchdowns and 35 100-yard rushing games. He won the Melberger Award as Division III's top player following the 2000 season.
