Martin Wurl '78
Spencerport, N.Y., native Marty Wurl earned six total NCAA Division III All-America honors in both diving events at Grove City College from 1974 to 1978.
As a freshman during the 1974-75 season, Wurl emerged as one of the nation's top small college divers and capped his rookie year by taking second place in 3-meter diving at the NCAA Championships in Meadville, Pa. That runner-up performance marked the best finish by a Grove City athlete in national competition.
The next season, Wurl earned his first All-America honor in 1-meter diving when he finished ninth at the national meet in Washington, Pa.
Wurl then earned All-America honors in both diving events in 1977 and 1978. As a junior, Wurl placed seventh in 1-meter diving and 10th on the high board at the NCAA Championships in Oberlin, Ohio.
He concluded his career at the 1978 NCAA Championships in Grinnell, Iowa, by earning second place in both 1- and 3-meter diving. Wurl compiled the highest combined finish among all divers that year at the national championships.
The Wolverines finished in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships in each of his four seasons under head coach Jim Longnecker. Grove City compiled a 36-10 dual meet record during his career. Individually, Wurl went undefeated in dual meets. He held Grove City College Pool and program records in both diving events upon graduation.
Wurl also earned two letters as a pole vaulter for the Grove City track and field team. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration and now works for JRLON, Inc.
