Benjamin Jones '23

Ben Jones
played football at Grove City from 1919-22 and helped Grove City to a 20-9-3
aggregate record during his career. Jones started at fullback, halfback and
tackle during his career. As a junior in 1921, he captained the Grove City
squad that posted a 7-2 record and won the Class “B” championship (small
colleges) in Western Pennsylvania.
Grove City then
went 5-3-1 in Ben’s senior season under second-year head coach Guy “Chalky”
Williamson. As a freshman, Jones helped Grove City to a 6-0-1 season. In his
sophomore season, he played for Grove City coaching legend Bob Thorn.
Following his
collegiate career, Jones became a pioneer in the early days of the National
Football League. He spent six years in the NFL from 1923-28. As a rookie, he
earned All-NFL after helping the Canton Bulldogs to an 11-0-1 record and the
NFL title.
He also won NFL
titles with the Cleveland Bulldogs in 1924 and the Frankford Yellow Jackets
in 1926. He led the Yellow Jackets with nine touchdowns during their title
season.
For his career,
Jones scored 25 touchdowns in the NFL.
