Robert Smith '59
In over 50 years of affiliation with Grove City College as a student, employee and alumnus, Bob Smith has made immeasurable contributions to his alma mater.
He worked in a variety of administrative positions from 1970 to 2001, including a 21-year stint as Director of Public Relations, Sports Information Director and editor of Alumni News.
He and student assistants provided all the players and coaches in the athletic department with sports publicity and statistics to regional and hometown media. The “part-time” SID position expanded with the rapidly-growing women’s varsity programs in the 1970s and early 1980s.
During this era, which predated computers, digital cameras, cell phones and other modern technology, the College maintained morning classes and staff office hours on Saturdays.
His work helped 30 Wolverine athletes achieve Academic All-America distinction in eight different sports.
Smith added the position of Director of Alumni Relations in 1987 and left his public relations/sports information work to become Director of Career Placement. He later served as Registrar for six years until retirement. He was enrolled or worked under five Grove City College presidents.
As a student, the Erie Academy graduate lettered his last two years on the soccer team for head coach Dan Leviton and in his senior year, Bob played varsity tennis. He served as secretary of Varsity “G” and as president of the senior class.
Smith graduated in 1959 with a bachelor of science in commerce and later completed his master of education at Westminster College.
Bob has served on the Alumni Council since the mid-1960s and has been a helpful resource person for each of Grove City’s Hall of Fame committees.
He married a classmate and watched both children earn Grove City College diplomas.
