William Allen '50
A lifelong resident of Grove City, Bill Allen's association with Grove City College began after World War II and continued through five decades of dedicated service to the College.
After a three-year stint as a lab technician in the United
States Navy, Allen re-enrolled at the College in 1947.
He played as either the No. 1 or No. 2 man for Grove City's men's golf team from 1947 to 1950 under head coach Bob Thorn.
Allen won Grove City Country Club's championship four times in
the 1940s (1942, 1946, 1947, 1949) and added a fifth Club title in 1963.
He also competed in the Championship Flight of the prestigious Sunnehanna Invitational in Johnstown, Pa.
Allen graduated from Grove City with a business degree in 1950 and returned to the College in 1954, where he worked in a variety of positions within the athletic department for the next 34 years.
He became head men's golf coach in 1965 and held that post until retiring in 1988. As head coach, Allen directed Grove City to a 141-111-5 dual-match record over 24 seasons. The Wolverines posted four double-digit win totals and 14 winning campaigns under Allen's guidance.
Additionally, Allen supervised and maintained the College's
bowling alleys and advised the College's bowling team during his tenure.
He also worked as the scoreboard operator for Grove City College basketball games in the College Arena and for Grove City football games at Thorn Field throughout the '60s, '70s and '80s.
