W&J gets first PAC win, beats GCC 67-58
WASHINGTON, PA, February 7, 2001--The Grove City Wolverines outshot and outrebounded host Washington & Jefferson, but the Presidents led 27-24 at halftime and never trailed again in a 67-58 conference victory Wednesday night.
The Wolverines fell to 3-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and 12-9 overall, while W&J netted its first league win, improving to 1-5, 6-15 overall.
Grove City, who trailed by as many as 11 points early in the second half, cut the deficit to three, 47-44, with 9:25 left in the game, but W&J wouldn't bend any further, holding a five- to nine-point lead the rest of the way.
Junior Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) paced the Wolverines in the scoring column with 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor and a 6-for-6 clip from the line. Junior Dan Quinn (Uniontown, OH/Green) added 10 points, hitting 5 of 7 from the field. Senior Shane Meling (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) knocked down 4 of 7 and finished with 10 points as Grove City shot 49% to W&J's 42%.
Meling and Quinn grabbed a team-high seven boards each to help the Wolverines post a decisive 35-20 edge on the glass. Roberts added five caroms and three blocked shots.
Nolan Larry fired in a game-high 23 points for W&J, including 10 of 12 from the stripe.
Grove City committed a season-high 25 turnovers and picked up just nine points at the free-throw line on 13 attempts. Meanwhile, W&J hit 18 of 32 from the stripe and turned the ball over 13 times.
