Wolverines sweep Thiel, keep title hopes alive
GREENVILLE, PA, February 10, 2001--Grove City posted a 69-67 wire-to-wire victory over first-place Thiel Saturday afternoon, using 55% shooting to sweep the season series from the defending league champs. The Wolverines improved to 13-9 overall and 4-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while the Tomcats fell to 10-13 overall, 4-2 in the PAC.
Sophomore Andy Vlajkovich (Canfield, OH/Canfield) fired in a game-high 20 points, hitting 6 of 10 shots from the floor and 6 of 6 from the line, and dished out five assists. Senior Shane Meling (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) tossed in 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting, while junior Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) recorded 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting and added a game-high 10 boards, helping the Wolverines post a 41-25 rebounding edge. Junior Chris Kreider (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) knocked down 4 of 5 from the field and finished with 10 points.
Grove City led 38-24 at halftime and held a 13-point lead, 42-29, with 16:45 left in the game. The Tomcats rallied with a 20-7 run to pull within two, 49-47, at 8:29. The Wolverines went back up by nine, 59-50, but Thiel scored the next seven points to cut it to two, 59-57 with 2:08 remaining. Grove City secured the victory from the line in the final two minutes, sinking 12 of 14 freebies to finish 17-for-22 in the game.
Thiel's A.H. Davis scored 16 points to pace the Tomcats.
The Wolverines currently sit in third place in the PAC behind Bethany (5-1) and Thiel (4-2).
