Meling posts career game in season finale
GROVE CITY, PA, February 17, 2001--Grove City's lone senior Shane Meling (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) scored a career-high 24 points in his final game, hitting 5 of 8 three-pointers, but visiting Westminster used 12 threes to defeat the Wolverines, 83-70, Saturday.
Grove City closed the regular season 13-11 overall, after going 11-14 last year. Westminster won its seventh game in a row to finish 19-6.
Meling, who fired in 18 points in the first half, knocked down his first five shots from the floor, including two from behind the arc, helping the Wolverines open a nine-point lead, 21-12, with 13:04 left before halftime. Westminster rallied to take the lead for good, 37-35, at the 2:36 mark before taking a 42-41 lead into intermission. The Titans scored the first five points of the second half to go up by six, 47-41. Grove City managed to trim the deficit to three points twice, but Westminster went on an 11-2 run to jump ahead 61-49 with 13:21 to play. The Titans led by at least seven points the rest of the way.
A 1,000-point scorer in high school, Meling finished his college career with 764 points, including 96 three-pointers.
Junior Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) tossed in 10 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore Andy Vlajkovich (Canfield, OH/Canfield) posted nine points and five assists.
Chad Phillips tallied a game-high 25 points for the Titans on 9-for-12 shooting, including 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Grove City placed third in the Presidents' Athletic Conference at 4-4, one game behind Thiel (5-3) who defeated Washington & Jefferson Saturday, 89-74. Bethany (7-1) claimed its first league title in 19 years after placing last a year ago.
