Wolverines shoot lights out from three, win opener

GROVE CITY, PA, November 16, 2001--Led by a career-high 15 points from sophomore guard Ian Dean (Damscus, MD/Damascus), the Grove City Wolverines opened the 2001-02 season with a 77-64 victory over Allegheny in the West Penn Classic at the Grove City College Arena.

Dean drilled all four of his three-point attempts as the Wolverines rallied from a 36-32 hole at the half. Dean and junior Andy Vlajkovich (Canfield, OH/Canfield) opened the second half with threes to give Grove City the lead. Vlajkovich finished with nine points and six assists. A Dean three with 16 minutes left gave GCC the lead for good.

As a team, the Wolverines were 8-of-11 (73 percent) from three-point territory. For the game Grove City shot 52 percent (28-for-54) from the field.

Sixth man Jim Fetzner (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) drilled three triples and finished with 13 points. Sophomore center Phil Bushre poured in a dozen points and added seven boards.

Also for the Wolverines, sophomore Tanner Prosser (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood) handed out a career-high seven assists and added eight second-half points and five rebounds. Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) helped Grove City to a 38-35 edge on the glass with a game-high nine boards. The senior forward also blocked three shots.

Ryan Meerstein led Allegheny with 19 points, while Matt Magnusen came off the bench to score 15. Billy Dungee dished out six assists for the Gators (0-1).

Grove City held Allegheny to just 38.5 percent accuracy from the field.

In the first game of the night, Carnegie Mellon outlasted Washington and Jefferson, 83-74. Grove City will play at CMU Saturday night while Allegheny faces W&J at 6. The match-ups were predetermined.

Grove City had been 0-6 against Allegheny since last beating the Gators, 61-60, in 1994-95.
