Wolverines bounce back against W&J
YORK, PA, January 5, 2002--Sophomore Tanner Prosser (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood) recorded his third double-double in the last six games as the Grove City Wolverines breezed by league-rival Washington & Jefferson College, 78-59, in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at York College.
Prosser scored a game-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting, grabbed 11 rebounds and added three assists for the Wolverines, who led from wire-to-wire. They opened up an 11-2 lead and closed the first half on top, 36-19, after holding the Presidents to 20 percent shooting (5-25). Grove City led by as many as 24 points twice in the second half before settling for the 19-point margin of victory.
Three other Wolverines scored in double figures: sophomore Phil Bushre (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) netted 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting; junior Andy Vlajkovich (Canfield, OH/Canfield) tossed in 12 points, including a pair of threes; and junior Jeb Schreiber (Oil City, PA/Oil City) contributed 10 points and six boards off the bench.
Senior Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) helped the cause with 11 caroms as the Wolverines finished plus-21 on the glass (49-28) after being outrebounded for the first time last night in a 65-63 loss to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The Wolverines shot 61 percent from the floor in the second half (17-28) and finished 49 percent for the game (29-59). W&J was held to 36 percent shooting (22-61).
Grove City (9-4) will officially open its 2002 Presidents' Athletic Conference slate at home on Jan. 16 against Waynesburg College. The Wolverines will meet W&J (3-7) again in Washington on Jan. 23 and at the WolvArena on Feb. 9.
