O'Keefe named Academic All-America
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City College men's basketball player Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio) earned College Division Academic All-America Second Team honors Monday afternoon from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and ESPN The Magazine.
A 6-foot-7 senior center, O'Keefe is the first Grove City men's basketball player to earn Academic All-America honors since Curt Siverling in 1985.
This season, O'Keefe is averaging 18.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He is shooting 66.8 percent from the field and has ranked among the national leaders in that category throughout the 2009-10 season. O'Keefe is also shooting 77.7 percent at the foul line and is third on the team with 53 assists.
O'Keefe's 449 points this season represents the 11th-highest single-season total in program history. He is also Grove City's all-time leader in career field goal percentage at 60.8 percent. O'Keefe ranks 15th all-time at Grove City with 1,123 career points.
He has helped the Wolverines to a 17-8 overall record and a 9-3 mark in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. The Wolverines are the top seed in this week's conference tournament.
As a junior, O'Keefe earned Second Team All-PAC recognition and All-Great Lakes honors from D3Hoops.com.
In the classroom, O'Keefe has achieved a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in mathematics/secondary education. He is a Dean's List student and has been named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll. O'Keefe is a Presidential Scholarship recipient and has been inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi education honorary.
O'Keefe is the seventh Grove City men's basketball player to earn Academic All-America honors. In 1977, Joe Burns and Dirk Vandermeer both earned Honorable Mention Academic All-America. In 1978, Bill Fox earned Third Team honors while Mike Donahoe captured First Team Academic All-America in 1979.
Mark Smith earned Third Team Academic All-America in 1983. Siverling earned Academic All-America in both 1984 and 1985.
O'Keefe is Grove City's 13th Academic All-American since 2002. Those 13 student-athletes have earned a total of 18 Academic All-America citations.
