Grove City blasts Allegheny in West Penn Classic

PITTSBURGH  -- One night after sustaining their worst opening-night loss in 12 seasons, the Grove City College men's basketball team stormed back Saturday night with an 82-59 victory over Allegheny in the second night of action in the 2003 West Penn Classic at Carnegie Mellon University's Skibo Gymnasium.

Junior forward Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) led Grove City with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, tying a career high. Junior center Matt O'Brien (Reading, Pa./Exeter) made his first career start and tossed in a career-high 10 points on 5-for-6 accuracy.

Meanwhile, freshman center Eric O'Brien (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) came off the bench to score 10 points and grab six rebounds in his collegiate debut. Junior forward Tanner Prosser (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The Wolverines (1-1) shot over 60 percent (34-for-56) from the floor on the night, including an 18-for-25 performance (72 percent) in the second half. Meanwhile, the Grove City defense held Allegheny (0-2) to just 9-for-29 (31 percent) accuracy in the final 20 minutes. The Gators made just eight of 32 three-point attempts.

Grove City has now won three straight meetings with Allegheny. The Wolverines return to action at Penn State Behrend Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
