Bushre named West Penn MVP as Grove City rolls
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Senior center Phil Bushre (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) earned the Most Valuable Player award for the 2004 West Penn Classic Saturday night as his 14-point effort helped lead Grove City to an 83-66 win over host Allegheny at the David V. Wise Center in non-conference men's basketball action.
Bushre scored 23 points in the Wolverines' 81-73 win over Carnegie Mellon Friday night in the first night of the West Penn Classic. Senior forward Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) fired in a game-high 20 points and joined Bushre on the All-Classic team.
The Wolverines (2-0) shot 19 of 27 (70 percent) from the floor in the second half in posting 52 points over the final 20 minutes. In two games this year, Grove City has scored 109 second-half points. Grove City finished the game 29 of 47 (61.7 percent) from the field.
Grove City held Allegheny (1-1) to just 17 points in the first half. The Wolverines extended their 31-17 halftime lead to 18, 45-27, early in the second half. However, the Gators whittled the lead to 53-46 with 10 minutes left. Grove City quickly answered as Bushre scored inside, sophomore forward Mark Smith (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) drained a three and freshman guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) scored a driving lay-up.
Senior point guard Mike Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) added 11 points and six boards for the Wolverines. Carr had a team-high seven rebounds. Grove City held a 39-34 edge on the glass.
Chase McKim led Allegheny with 14 points. Grove City will host Penn State Behrend Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
