Wolverines slip past Presidents, 57-54

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team improved to 13-9 overall and 6-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 57-54 win over Washington and Jefferson at the Henry Memorial Center.

Senior center Phil Bushre (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) put the Wolverines ahead to stay, 56-54, by sinking a lay-up with 37 seconds left. Senior forward Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) split two free throws in the final seconds to help secure the win. Bushre and Eller each posted 14 points.

Washington and Jefferson (6-17, 3-5 PAC) jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the first half and maintained the lead into the second half. However, a Bushre basket seven minutes into the second half gave Grove City its first lead of the game, 37-35. An Eller jumper with 3:40 left gave the Wolverines their largest lead of the game, 52-47.

President guard Brandon Studer tied the game at 54 at the 1:03 mark with a three-pointer, part of his game-best 15-point effort.

Grove City held a 29-27 edge on the glass, led by Bushre's seven rebounds. Eller had four assists while senior guard J.D. Collar (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) had nine points and three assists.
