Wolverines fall at Marietta, 90-81

 MARIETTA, Ohio – Five Grove City College men’s basketball players scored in double figures Thursday night but the Wolverines (3-6) dropped a 90-81 verdict to host Marietta in the semifinals of the 35th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament at Ban Johnson Field House. 

Grove City will play Bridgewater (Va.) in Friday’s consolation game at 5 p.m. Bridgewater fell to Adrian, 64-62, in Thursday’s other semifinal. 

Junior forward Craig Hallman (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside) led Grove City with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double. Both the 20 points and 10 rebounds are career highs for Hallman. 

Senior forward Chuck Cotherman (Knox, Pa./Keystone) added 13 points while senior guard Matt Phillips (Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston), sophomore guard Joe Capotosta (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) and junior forward Mark Smith (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) all had 10 points. 

Grove City led by as many as six, 24-18, in the first half but the Pioneers eventually took a 41-39 lead at halftime. 

The Wolverines held a 41-40 edge on the glass but turned the ball over 28 times against Marietta’s continuous trapping defense. Matt Rucker led Marietta with 22 points while Matt Phillips had 18 for the Pioneers.
