Bridgewater nips Grove City

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Grove City College men’s basketball team fell to 3-7 Friday evening with a 71-67 loss to Bridgewater (Va.) in the consolation game of the 35th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament at Ban Johnson Field House. 

Grove City took its final lead of the game, 60-59, with 2:49 left in the game as freshman forward John Scheller (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) drained a pair of free throws. However, Bridgewater (4-5) used a 10-4 run to seal the victory. Center Clay Michael started the run with two free throws while Jay Strotman added a three-point play that gave the Eagles a 64-60 lead. 

Neither team led by more than seven points. Bridgewater took an early 12-5 lead while Grove City led 48-41 midway through the second half. The game featured six ties and 10 lead changes. 

Junior forward Mark Smith (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and sophomore guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) each had a team-high 11 points for the Wolverines. Scheller added 10 points. 

Grove City held a 29-23 rebounding edge as Carr and Scheller both grabbed five rebounds. The Wolverines also shot 23 of 27 (85 percent) at the foul line. For the season, Grove City is shooting 75 percent at the foul line as a team. 

Michael led Bridgewater with 21 points while Josh Maupin added 15. 

Grove City will host Pitt-Greensburg Wednesday night in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
