Defense carries Wolverines past Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Grove City College men's basketball team held host Thomas More to 28 percent (8 of 29) shooting from the floor in the second half as Grove City rallied for a 66-57 win over Thomas More Monday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Connor Convocation Center.

Grove City (6-10, 2-1 PAC) trailed by as many as 13 in the first half, 26-13, but whittled the Saints' lead to 30-25 by halftime. The Wolverines took the lead, 36-35, with 12:51 left on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk). Thomas More tied the game at 38-38 moments later but Grove City took the lead for good with an 8-0 run.

Sophomore guard Ryan Gerber (Baltic, Ohio/Garaway) drained a pair of baskets while sophomore forward Bobby Turner (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) started the run with a layup.

Carr led Grove City with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior forward Craig Hallman (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside) added nine points. Ten different Wolverines scored in the win.

Senior point guard Matt Phillips (Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston) had six assists and no turnovers while Gerber had four steals. Phillips also had three thefts. Grove City also committed just 10 turnovers in the victory.

R.K. Thurman led Thomas More (1-15, 1-3 PAC) with a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double.

Grove City will host Thiel Wednesday night in PAC action at 7:30 p.m.
