Wolverines roll past W&J on Senior Day

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College men's basketball team closed the 2005-06 regular season with a 76-56 win over Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Washington and Jefferson Saturday afternoon in the Grove City College Arena. The 20-point win is Grove City's largest margin of victory this season.

Grove City (9-16, 5-7 PAC) took the lead for good with a 14-1 run in the first half. Senior forward Chuck Cotherman (Knox, Pa./Keystone) capped the blitz with a three-pointer, his 10th of the season.

In the second half, sophomore guard Joe Capotosta (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) fired in a pair of three-pointers to help the Wolverines extend the lead to 24, 58-34, with 10:43 left. Washington and Jefferson (10-15, 8-4 PAC) pulled to within 15, 67-52, but Grove City sophomore guard Ryan Gerber (Baltic, Ohio/Garaway) drained a three-pointer to help seal the win.

Gerber fired in a career-high 18 points for Grove City while Capotosta added a personal-best 16 points, including three three-pointers. Cotherman added a dozen points.

Grove City shot 31 of 57 (54 percent) from the floor for the game and out-rebounded the Presidents, 33-24. Senior guard Matt Phillips (Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston) distributed five assists. Phillips, Cotherman and guard Eric Tinstman (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) were honored prior to the game as part of Senior Day festivities.

Jon Koch led Washington and Jefferson with 13 points.

Grove City is the fifth seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament. Grove City will play at No. 4 Waynesburg Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in a tournament quarterfinal.
