Defense carries Grove City past Case Western, 65-57

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City limited visiting Case Western Reserve to just 31 percent shooting (19 of 61) from the field Wednesday night as the host Wolverines earned a 65-57 victory over Case Western in non-conference men's basketball action in the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (5-6) led 36-26 at the half and broke the game open in the second half with a 13-3 run. Junior guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) fired in three three-pointers during the run while junior guard Ryan Gerber (Baltic, Ohio/Garaway) added a pair of jumpers.

Carr finished with 11 points; one of three Wolverines who scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) led Grove City with 13 points while junior guard Joe Capotosta (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) added a dozen points. Grove City shot 15 of 30 (50 percent) from the floor in the first half and 25 of 55 (46 percent) for the game.

The Wolverines also limited Case Western center Mason Conrad to just seven points on 2 of 13 shooting. Conrad entered the game as the Spartans' leading scorer, averaging 19 points per game. Steve Young led Case Western (4-7) with 12 points.

Case owned a 45-38 edge on the glass. Senior forward Mark Smith (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) led Grove City with nine rebounds. Grove City had lost three straight to Case Western prior to Wednesday night's victory.

The Wolverines will visit Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Bethany Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
