Comeback falls short at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team nearly rallied from a 20-point deficit over the final 10 minutes of Saturday night's game at Waynesburg. However, the host Yellow Jackets warded off Grove City's comeback and pulled out a 75-68 win at Rudy Marisa Field House in Presidents' Athletic Conference action. The loss snaps Grove City's five-game win streak.

Grove City (10-9, 3-4 PAC) trailed 62-42 with 10:40 left and over the next three minutes, Grove City trimmed the lead to just 65-49. However, the Wolverines assembled a 13-0 run with pulled them to within 65-62 with 3:34 left. Senior center Craig Hallman (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside) posted back-to-back baskets during the run while senior forward Mark Smith (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) drained a three-pointer.

A pair of free throws from freshman guard Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) capped the run. Sophomore guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) brought Grove City to within one, 69-68, with two minutes later. Waynesburg guard Beau Wilson answered with a three-pointer, though, helping the Yellow Jackets finish the game on a 6-0 run.

Gibson led Grove City with 15 points while Hallman added 12. Smith posted 11 points. Wilson led Waynesburg (9-9, 2-5) with 18 points.

Waynesburg, which led 36-30 at the half, shot 13 of 26 (50 percent) beyond the three-point line. The Jackets also shot 50 percent from the floor (25 of 50) for the game. Both teams struggled at the foul line. Grove City made 14 of 23 attempts while Waynesburg shot 12 of 25. The Yellow Jackets owned a 36-35 rebounding advantage.

Grove City will host Thiel Wednesday night in PAC action at 7:30 p.m.
