Grove City rolls past Franciscan

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team evened its record at 1-1 Saturday afternoon with a 77-60 victory over Franciscan University of Steubenville in the second day of action at the Geneva College Tip-Off Tournament at Metheny Field House.

Grove City jumped out to a 21-9 lead midway through the first half and never led by less than nine throughout the remainder of the half. The Wolverines, who led wire-to-wire, maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.

Senior guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) fired in a game-high 17 points, including five three-point goals, for Grove City. Junior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) highlighted his first collegiate start by tossing 15 points in a career-high 30 minutes. Senior forward Bob Turner (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) added nine points, a game-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Grove City limited the Barons (0-2) to just 29 percent shooting (11 of 38) from the floor in the second half. Meanwhile, Grove City made 13 of 26 (50 percent) field-goal attempts in the second half. Grove City led 38-27 at the half and held a 50-38 edge in rebounds for the game.

Junior guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) distributed five assists while Carr contributed three steals. The Wolverines were also 10 for 22 (46 percent) behind the three-point line.

Matt Liedel led Franciscan with 15 points.

Grove City will visit Penn State Altoona Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
