Carr hits game-winner, sets record in 58-55 win

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) drained a fadeaway three-point goal as time expired Saturday afternoon, vaulting the Grove City College men's basketball team to a 58-55 victory over host Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Henry Memorial Center. It is Grove City's sixth straight win.

Carr became Grove City's all-time leader in three-point goals with his game-winner. He now has 160 threes, which passes the previous mark of 159, set by Dave Pifer from 1996-2000. Carr finished the game with a game-high 16 points, including four three-pointers.

Junior guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added 12 points while sophomore center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) tossed in 10 points. Both Gibson and O'Keefe went 5-for-7 from the field.

Grove City (6-1, 2-0) trailed 31-28 at halftime but surged ahead 34-33 on an O'Keefe jumper in the lane. The Wolverines never trailed the rest of the way. Grove City led by as many as eight in the second half, 49-41, on a three from senior Bobby Turner (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) at the 9:41 mark.

W&J eventually tied the game at 55 with 58 seconds left on a layup by Josip Lucic-Jozak. Turner missed a three with 35 seconds left but sophomore Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) secured the offensive rebound, allowing the Wolverines to have the final possession. Carr's game-winner came after an out-of-bounds play with four seconds left.

Grove City limited the Presidents (3-3, 0-1) to just 35 percent (18 of 51) shooting from the field for the game. Grove City also held W&J's leading scorer, Albert Varacallo, scoreless in the game. Lucic-Jozak led the Presidents with 14 points.

Grove City out-rebounded W&J, 36-34. Both teams had just eight turnovers. Grove City shot 23 of 57 (40 percent) from the floor in the win.

The Wolverines will visit Hiram Wednesday night in non-conference action at 7:30 p.m.
