Wolverines charge past Waynesburg, clinch No. 2 seed

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team limited visiting Waynesburg to one field goal over the final 10 minutes and 39 seconds Saturday afternoon as Grove City rallied for an 84-62 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory in the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (15-8, 8-3 PAC) trailed 56-54 but took the lead for good on a three-pointer from senior guard Joe Capotosta (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth). Capotosta's three sparked a game-ending 30-6 run for the Wolverines. Grove City shot 9-of-13 from the field down the stretch, including three-pointers from junior guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and senior guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk).

Freshman center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) added a pair of putbacks during the run. Verderber led Grove City with a career-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Carr fired in 18 points while Gibson tossed in 14. Senior guard Ryan Gerber (Baltic, Ohio/Garaway) added a dozen points and six rebounds.

Senior forward Bobby Turner (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, helping Grove City own a 41-23 edge on the glass. Turner and sophomore center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) both had four assists.

Grove City shot 54 percent (29 of 54) from the field for the game, including a 13-for-22 (59 percent) in the second half. Meanwhile, Waynesburg shot 41 percent (22 of 54) from the floor.

Grove City led 40-29 at the half but Waynesburg rallied to take a 56-54 lead on a steal and layup from Jered Gamble. After a Grove City timeout, Capotosta buried his go-ahead three-pointer.

Tim Drakeley led Waynesburg with 20 points while Josh Parisi had 17.

The victory clinches the No. 2 seed in the PAC Championship Tournament for the Wolverines. Grove City will host a quarterfinal round game at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 26.

Grove City will visit Saint Vincent Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
