Wolverines top Salisbury, 79-67

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Senior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) fired in five three-point goals as part of a 21-point outing Saturday, helping the Grove City College men's basketball team earn a 79-67 victory over Salisbury in the consolation game of Dickinson College's Pizza Hut Tip-Off Tournament.

Senior guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in 14 points while freshman forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds in his first collegiate start. All 10 Grove City players who saw time scored. As a team, the Wolverines shot 57 percent (13 of 23) from behind the three-point line.

Grove City (1-1) fired in nine three-pointers in the first half and charged out to a 47-25 halftime lead. Salisbury (0-3) eventually closed the gap to 52-47 with 10:46 left in the game. However, the Wolverines used a 12-4 run to pull away for good.

Gibson, McCoy and sophomore center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) all had three assists. Each team had 33 rebounds. Grove City shot 48 percent (26 of 54) from the field while holding Salisbury to a 38-percent effort (21 of 55).

Grove City will host Penn State Altoona Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the 2008-09 home opener.
