Wolverines roll past Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Four Grove City players scored in double figures Wednesday night, helping the host Wolverines earn an 80-68 victory over visiting Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference men's basketball action at the Grove City College Arena.

Senior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) led Grove City with 17 points while senior guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) tossed in a dozen points. Junior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds while sophomore center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) added 11 points.

Grove City (8-5, 3-2 PAC) led 38-36 at halftime and broke the game open with an 25-7 run in the second half. Junior forward Ryan King (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) ignited the run with an inside basket while McCoy hit a three and Verderber then sank a pair of baskets. Freshman guard Cody Fleeger (Butler, Pa./Butler), who made his first collegiate start Wednesday night, capped the run with a tip-in.

Waynesburg (5-9, 2-3) pulled to within 70-61 with 3:12 left but Grove City put the lead back in double figures as Gibson hit a foul shot and after a technical foul on Waynesburg's Dan Happe, McCoy sank two free throws.

Grove City went 30 for 43 (70 percent) at the foul line. The Wolverines shot 23 of 47 (49 percent) from the field while holding Waynesburg to a 25-for-70 (36 percent) effort. Grove City also out-rebounded Waynesburg 36-30.

Gibson and O'Keefe each had four assists. King added nine points and four rebounds. Grove City had 17 turnovers while Waynesburg turned the ball over 13 times.

Jason Clark led Waynesburg with 18 points while Happe had 16 points before being disqualified with five fouls as his fifth foul came on the technical. Ryan Courneen, Waynesburg's leading scorer at 14.8 points per game, scored just four points before fouling out on a technical in the second half.

The Wolverines had not played at home in 35 days. Saturday, Grove City returns to the road as the Wolverines visit Saint Vincent at 8 p.m.
