Saint Vincent tops Grove City

LATROBE, Pa. ' The Grove City College men's basketball team fell to 8-6 overall Saturday night with an 81-70 setback against host Saint Vincent in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference members at the Carey Center.

Grove City led 29-26 with four minutes left in the first half but Saint Vincent (13-3) closed the half on a 17-2 run. Tre'sor Kalambay's four-point play ignited the Saint Vincent run. The Bearcats led 43-31 at halftime.

Saint Vincent maintained its double-digit lead for much of the second half. Grove City closed to within 61-48 with seven minutes left on a three-pointer from senior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark). However, Saint Vincent guard Joey Butler countered with a three-pointer of his own.

McCoy led Grove City with 13 points while freshman guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) tied a career high with 10 points. Grove City shot 53 percent (27 of 51) from the field, including a 7-for-15 effort on three-point goals.

However, Grove City turned the ball over 21 times.

Butler led Saint Vincent with 18 points and seven assists while Billy Bains added 14 points. Saint Vincent shot 48 percent (32 of 66) from the field. The Bearcats also made 10 of 24 three-point attempts.

Saint Vincent out-rebounded Grove City 37-27. McCoy grabbed a team-high six rebounds for the Wolverines. He also had four assists.

Saint Vincent has won 22 straight home games. The Bearcats are still provisional members of NCAA Division III, thus, Saturday's game does not count in the conference standings.

Grove City will host Thiel Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in PAC action.
