Grove City drops opener
ALTOONA, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened the 2009-10 season Wednesday night with a 61-59 setback against host Penn State Altoona in non-conference action in Adler Gymnasium.
Grove City (0-1) jumped out to an 18-8 lead midway through the first half but Altoona (1-1) eventually whittled the lead to 20-19 by halftime. In the second half, the teams swapped the lead seven times before Penn State Altoona took the lead for good on Jay Adamsky's layup with 8:27 left.
The Wolverines cut the lead to 57-54 with 11 seconds left on a three-point goal by senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry). However, Penn State Altoona's Zach Spitz hit four free throws in the closing moments to seal the win.
O'Keefe and sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) both fired in 15 points for Grove City while sophomore guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) added 13 points.
Grove City shot 44 percent (19 of 43) from the field while Penn State Altoona also shot 44 percent (21 of 48). Altoona out-rebounded Grove City 30-27. Junior Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) grabbed a team-high six boards for the Wolverines.
Spitz led Altoona with 17 points while Kirk Peters added 16 points.
Grove City will face Penn State DuBois Friday in the semifinals of the Juniata College Doc Greene Tournament in Huntingdon, Pa. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
