Wolverines earn first win

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Four players scored in double figures Friday evening to help lift the Grove City College men's basketball team to a 73-63 victory over Penn State DuBois in the semifinals of the Juniata College Doc Greene Tournament at Memorial Gymnasium.

Senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) poured 24 points on 9-for-9 shooting from the field while sophomore guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) fired in 19 points. Sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) tossed in 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting while senior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) contributed 10 points.

Grove City (1-1) led 33-30 at halftime and maintained the lead throughout the second half. Matson hit eight consecutive free throws down the stretch to seal the win. He finished the game 13 for 13 at the line, tying Ryan Eller's single-game record for free-throw accuracy. Eller went 13 for 13 at the foul line against Carnegie Mellon Nov. 20, 2004.

Matson, McCoy and O'Keefe all grabbed seven rebounds each, helping the Wolverines own a 32-29 edge on the glass. Matson also had five assists while O'Keefe recorded four steals.

Grove City shot 50 percent (23 of 46) from the field for the game. The Wolverines also made 25 of 31 (81 percent) free throws. DuBois (1-1) shot 48 percent (26 of 54) from the floor. Each team had 18 turnovers.

Marcus Genevro led Penn State DuBois with 21 points.

Grove City will face either Hilbert or Juniata Saturday in the championship game at 4 p.m.
