Grove City improves to 3-1 in PAC

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team earned a 65-54 victory over visiting Bethany Thursday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena. It is Grove City's third straight victory. The win also puts Grove City atop the PAC with a 3-1 record. Bethany is now 3-1 in the PAC, 8-4 overall.

Grove City limited Bethany to a 17-for-53 (32 percent) shooting effort from the field Thursday night. The 54 points represents Bethany's lowest output since 2002.

Still, Grove City needed a 10-0 run over the final two minutes to seal the win. Senior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) started the spurt with a pair of free throws while senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) deposited back-to-back layups in transition. Sophomore guard Cody Fleeger (Butler, Pa./Butler) followed with an inside basket while O'Keefe capped the run with two foul shots.

O'Keefe led Grove City with 18 points while McCoy contributed 15. Freshman center Jeff Newell (Boone, N.C./Watauga) added a career-high 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

Sophomore guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) pulled in a team-leading nine rebounds, helping Grove City own a 36-33 edge on the glass. Matson also tied a career high with seven assists. Junior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) had a career-high seven assists in the win.

Sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) added nine points and three blocks. Grove City (8-5 overall) shot 46 percent (21 of 46) from the field. The Wolverines led 35-29 at halftime.

Nick Wilcox led Bethany with 19 points while Joe Testa added 15 points and a dozen rebounds.

Grove City will visit Thiel Saturday at 3 p.m. in PAC action.
