Geneva nips Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped to 8-7 overall Wednesday night as the Wolverines dropped a 53-50 decision to visiting Geneva at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City committed just 13 turnovers but could not overcome an 18-for-55 (33 percent) shooting performance from the field.

Grove City trailed 53-44 with 23 seconds left but sophomore guard Cody Fleeger (Butler, Pa./Butler) and senior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) both hit three-point goals in the closing moments, cutting Geneva's lead to 53-50. However, Geneva (8-7) successfully inbounded the ball after McCoy's three-pointer and ran out the remaining 1.1 seconds.

Geneva closed the first half on an 8-2 run and led 26-20 at intermission. Geneva extended its lead to 41-29 with 7:36 left but Fleeger scored five straight points for the Wolverines. Fleeger finished with 11 points. Sophomore guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) fired in a game-high 14 points for Grove City while senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) also had 11 points.

Richard Colick led Geneva with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Geneva shot 41 percent (21 of 51) from the field. Geneva also owned a 37-32 rebound edge. Matson grabbed seven rebounds for Grove City.

Matson, O'Keefe, junior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) and sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) all had three assists each.

Grove City is now 4-1 at home. It is the third straight home game that Grove City has held the opposition to 54 points or fewer. Grove City still leads the all-time series with Geneva 84-70. Wednesday's game does not count in the Presidents' Athletic Conference standings due to Geneva's provisional membership status in NCAA Division III.

The Wolverines visit Saint Vincent Saturday night at 8 p.m.
