Grove City stays atop conference
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team remained atop the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon by rolling to a 65-48 victory over visiting Waynesburg (2-15, 0-8 PAC) in conference action at the Grove City College Arena. It is Grove City's fifth straight win overall. The Wolverines (13-7, 7-2 PAC) have held six straight visiting teams to 54 points or less and two straight foes to less than 50 points.
Grove City never trailed in the game and jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first half. The Wolverines extended the lead to 38-23 by halftime and then opened the second half on a 10-4 run. Junior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) opened the second half with a layup and senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) followed with three consecutive baskets. Sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) capped the spurt with a jumper.
The Wolverines would later extend the lead to 23 on five different occasions in the second half. Grove City 28 of 54 (52 percent) from the field for the game while limiting Waynesburg to 33 percent shooting (17 of 52). Waynesburg made just nine of 32 (28 percent) shots over the final 20 minutes.
O'Keefe poured in 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting while sophomore guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) contributed a dozen points. Vandermeer hauled in 11 rebounds to help the Wolverines claim a 41-29 advantage on the glass. O'Keefe had four assists.
No Waynesburg player scored in double figures. Ben Altmeyer led Waynesburg with nine points.
Matson's three-point play at the 12:04 mark gave Grove City its 20-9 lead. Grove City held Waynesburg scoreless over the final four minutes of the first half. Senior guard Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) pushed Grove City's lead to 36-23 with a three-point goal while sophomore guard Cody Fleeger (Butler, Pa./Butler) closed the first-half scoring with a backdoor layup. Fleeger added eight points for Grove City.
Grove City owns a half-game lead over Bethany (6-2 PAC) in the conference standings. The Wolverines will visit Bethany next Saturday at 4 p.m. in conference play.
