Wolverines pull out OT win at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Sophomore guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) poured in a career-high 28 points while senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) added 26 points to help lift the Grove City College men's basketball team to a 92-82 overtime win at Geneva Saturday night at Metheny Field House.

Grove City (15-8) finally took control of the game in overtime with a 9-0 run after Geneva took a 78-76 lead on a Richard Colick jumper. Matson tied the game with two free throws and moments later, senior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) put Grove City ahead to stay with two more foul shots.

The lead grew to 82-78 on a steal and layup by Matson. After another Geneva misfire, Matson drilled his fourth three-pointer of the night to give the Wolverines a seven-point lead.

In the final minute, O'Keefe went 4-for-4 at the foul line while McCoy added a pair of foul shots to seal the win. Grove City went 29 for 35 (83 percent) at the foul line in the game.

The Wolverines opened the game on a 19-5 run over the first six minutes of the game. Sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) sparked the run with a three-point basket and then a three-point play.

Geneva (12-11) answered by outscoring Grove City 31-7 over the next 10 minutes of the game. However, Grove City made a final charge before the half to take a 39-38 lead at the half. O'Keefe scored seven of the 13 points in the run while McCoy added four free throws. Sophomore guard Cody Fleeger (Butler, Pa./Butler) added a layup in that span.

Neither team led by more than five in the second half. Matson drilled a three-pointer with 15 seconds left in regulation to give Grove City a 76-74 lead. Geneva's Bryan Hill tied the game with six seconds left by hitting two free throws.

McCoy finished with 11 points while junior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) added 10 points. Grove City shot 28 of 47 (60 percent) from the floor, including a 7-of-12 effort on three-point goals.

Geneva converted 31 of 73 (43 percent) shots from the field. Colick led Geneva with 21 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Hill had 19 points.

O'Keefe grabbed eight rebounds, helping the Wolverines own a 35-33 edge on the glass. He and Tomaselli both had three assists. Vandermeer blocked three shots, which gives him 37 for the season. That is the second-highest single-season total in program history. The school record is 46, set by Pat Roberts in 2001-02.

Grove City has now won seven of its last eight games. Saturday's game does not count in the Presidents' Athletic Conference standings due to Geneva's provisional status in NCAA Division III.

The Wolverines host Saint Vincent Wednesday at 8 p.m.
