Grove City picks up win No. 16

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) recorded his first career double-double while senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) poured in a game-high 15 points Wednesday night to help lift the Grove City College men's basketball team to a 61-45 home win over Saint Vincent in the Grove City College Arena. Grove City is now 16-8 overall.

Vandermeer tossed in 11 points and pulled in a career-high 11 rebounds for Grove City. He also handed out four assists.

Defensively, Grove City limited Saint Vincent (6-18) to 16-for-58 (28 percent) shooting from the floor. Grove City converted 21 of 53 (40 percent) field goal attempts.

Grove City led 30-22 at halftime and used a 12-0 run early in the second half to break the game open. Vandermeer started the run with consecutive layups while freshman center Jeff Newell (Boone, N.C./Watauga) capped the run with a pair of baskets. Newell finished with 10 points and a career-best nine rebounds.

Midway through the second half, sophomore guard Cody Fleeger (Butler, Pa./Butler) drained consecutive three-pointers to give Grove City a 50-27 lead.

Sophomore guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and junior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) both had four assists. Matson also secured eight rebounds to help Grove City own a 47-30 edge on the boards.

Stephon Berry led Saint Vincent with 14 points.

Grove City honored O'Keefe, senior guard Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and senior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) before the game as part of Senior Night festivities.

With the win, Grove City completes its first sweep of Saint Vincent since the 1975-76 season. The teams did not play from 1982 to 2007.

Grove City wraps up the regular season Saturday at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Westminster. Grove City clinches the top seed in the PAC Championship Tournament with a win at Westminster.
