Grove City falls in OT

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's basketball team rallied to force overtime but could not pull out a season-opening win Tuesday night as host Kenyon slipped past the Wolverines 83-76 in non-conference action at Tomisch Arena.

Grove City took a 69-67 lead early in overtime on a layup by senior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria). However, Kenyon countered with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good. Grove City misfired on each of its five possessions during the run. Kenyon cemented the win by hitting seven of eight foul shots in the final minute of the game.

Kenyon led for the first 33 minutes of the game but the Wolverines finally pulled ahead with 6:58 left on a Tomaselli basket that broke a 48-48 tie. Tomaselli's layup capped a 9-0 run. He scored 22 of his career-high 24 points in the second half.

Kenyon led 63-57 with 2:55 left but junior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) drained a three-pointer and Tomaselli scored twice. Junior center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) cut the lead to 67-66 and after a Kenyon turnover, Matson split a pair of free throws to tie the game with 26 seconds left.

Matson and Verderber each finished with 15 points. Matson also added 11 rebounds and four assists.
