Turnovers doom Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team fell to 4-5 Wednesday night with a 65-54 home setback against Hiram in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Hiram (6-4) forced 25 Grove City turnovers, including 15 in the first half. Hiram forced three turnovers in the final 30 second of the first half to extend its 33-25 lead to 40-25 at the intermission.

Hiram pushed its lead to 61-43 in the second half before the Wolverines answered with a 7-0 run. Senior guard Bryn Moran (Columbus, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) started the run with a layup while freshman guard Evan Schell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oliver) followed with a three-pointer. Freshman guard Charlie Thomas (Warren, Pa./Warren) closed the run with a jumper.

However, the Wolverines could pull no closer.

Sophomore forward Jeff Newell (Blowing Rock, N.C./Watauga) led Grove City with 16 points and nine rebounds, both game highs. Junior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) added 10 points and three steals.

Grove City shot 42 percent (19 of 45) from the field while holding Hiram to 23-of-57 (40 percent) accuracy. Hiram owned a 35-32 rebound edge. The Terriers collected 14 offensive rebounds.

Glenn Campbell led Hiram with 16 points and six steals off the bench. Andrew Wiegand added 10 points.

Grove City returns to action December 30 at Slippery Rock.
