Rock tops Grove City

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 70-46 decision to NCAA Division II foe Slippery Rock (7-3) Thursday night in non-conference action at The Rock's Morrow Field House.

Slippery Rock broke the game open with a 12-2 run midway through the second half. The Rock led 34-20 at halftime and led by as many as 30 coming down the stretch.

Defensively, Grove City limited SRU to 37 percent (27 of 72) shooting from the field. However, The Rock owned a 49-32 edge in rebounds, including 21 offensive rebounds.

Slippery Rock also converted 20 Grove City turnovers into 31 points.

Junior center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) led Grove City with 12 points while senior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) added eight points. Verderber and junior Cody Fleeger (Butler, Pa./Butler) both had six rebounds each. Grove City (4-6) shot 19 of 50 (38 percent) from the field for the game.

Rashiid Coleman led The Rock with 15 points off the bench while Maron Brown added 14. Devin Taylor recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The teams had not played since the 1983-84 season. Slippery Rock leads the all-time series 45-33.

Grove City will visit Juniata Tuesday night in non-conference action. The Wolverines return to Presidents' Athletic Conference competition January 6 at Bethany.
