Grove City falls at Bethany
BETHANY, W.Va. -- Junior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) tied a single-game Grove City record with six three-point goals but the Wolverines dropped a 75-50 decision to host Bethany Thursday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference men's basketball action at Hummel Field House.
Matson fired in a team-high 19 points but Grove City could not recover from an early double-digit deficit.
Bethany (9-4, 3-1 PAC) jumped to a 15-0 lead in the first half and held the Wolverines scoreless until the 12:35 mark, when Matson hit the first of his six three-point goals.
Bethany led by as many as 21, 37-16, in the first half. The Bison led 39-21 at halftime. Grove City pulled to within 16 twice in the second half but could get no closer.
Grove City shot 33 percent (16 of 49) from the field for the game. Bethany, meanwhile, shot 48 percent (22 of 46). Bethany also forced Grove City into 24 turnovers.
Nick Wilcox led Bethany with 23 points. Ryan McFadden added 17 points while British Alexander posted an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double. Bethany owned a 34-30 edge in rebounds.
Freshman guard Charlie Thomas (Warren, Pa./Warren) grabbed seven rebounds for Grove City. Matson had four assists.
Mark Timko set the single-game three-point record with six three-point goals against Waynesburg in 1994. Shawn Carr hit six three-pointers against Westminster in 2007.
Grove City (4-8, 1-3 PAC) hosts Thiel Saturday at 3 p.m. in conference action.
